A guide to bidding
Every auction has its own bidding rules. Read the item details before placing your bid.
Place a bid
In a standard auction, the highest valid bid wins when the auction closes, subject to any reserve price.
Automatic bidding
Enter the most you are willing to pay. The auction places bids on your behalf, up to that limit.
Sealed bids
Submit your offer privately. Competing bid amounts are hidden.
Reverse auctions
These listings invite lower offers, such as a restoration commission. Read the brief carefully: the lowest valid offer wins, subject to any reserve.
Before you bid
Check the minimum bid, reserve status and closing time. Some auctions offer immediate purchase or require a participation seat. A soft close extends the auction when a bid arrives near the end.
